In 2011, Audi introduced the RS philosophy to the premium compact segment for the first time with the RS 3 Sportback, establishing a model family that remains successful to this day. At its heart was the acclaimed 2.5-litre TFSI inline five-cylinder engine. Thanks to its lightweight and compact design, combined with a turbocharger delivering up to 1.2 bar of boost pressure, it produced 250 kW (340 hp) and 450 Nm of torque. Its distinctive sound, reminiscent of the legendary Audi quattro models of the 1980s, was one of the car’s defining characteristics. An exhaust flap integrated into the left tailpipe further enhanced the characteristic engine note under full load.
Power was transmitted through a heavy-duty seven-speed S tronic transmission combined with Audi’s permanent all-wheel-drive quattro. The dual-clutch gearbox enabled rapid gear changes while an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch distributed torque between the front and rear axles according to driving conditions. A sports suspension lowered by 25 millimetres, a direct steering setup, and a generously dimensioned braking system ensured outstanding driving dynamics and precise handling. For particularly spirited driving, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) featured a Sport mode and could even be completely deactivated if desired.
The RS 3 Sportback’s appearance clearly reflected its performance potential. Distinctively styled front and rear bumpers pronounced side sills, a large roof spoiler, and flared front wings made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) gave the car a powerful and purposeful stance. Inside, Fine Nappa leather sports seats, special instruments featuring a boost pressure gauge and oil temperature display, and a flat-bottom multifunction sports steering wheel reinforced the vehicle’s dynamic character.
The first RS 3 Sportback laid the foundation for a new era of high-performance Audi compact cars. In 2015, the second generation, based on the A3 8V platform, followed. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, it increased the output of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine to 367 hp. To this day, the model series remains one of the clearest expressions of Audi’s unique combination of the distinctive five-cylinder sound, quattro all-wheel drive and everyday usability combined with high performance.
