At Auto China 2012 in Beijing, Audi Sport GmbH unveiled the RS Q3 concept, based on the Audi Q3. It previewed the production Audi RS Q3, launched in 2013 as the first RS model in Audi’s successful Q family, combining everyday practicality with outstanding performance.
Its 2.5 TFSI engine combined direct petrol injection with turbocharging. Power from the five-cylinder engine was transmitted via a seven-speed S tronic transmission to the permanent quattro four-wheel-drive system. Under normal driving conditions, drive was sent primarily to the front axle. Whenever wheel slip occurred, an electronically controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch redistributed torque to the rear axle rapidly and seamlessly.
The RS Q3 concept was distinguished by its Singleframe grille, featuring a surround in brushed and polished aluminium and a newly designed honeycomb mesh. The redesigned front bumper, with its prominent air intakes and front spoiler, was partially manufactured from CFRP, while the lower section was finished in black with blue clear-coat accents.
This combination of black and blue continued along the sides of the vehicle, extending to the door trim, side sills and wheel arch surrounds. CFRP exterior mirrors, aluminium window surrounds and the long roof spoiler finished in Ordos Blue further emphasised the vehicle’s sporting character.
The 20-inch alloy wheels (8.5 J × 20), featuring diamond-cut faces and sandblasted side surfaces, reflected the dynamic RS design language. The 255/30 tyres were an unusual choice for an SUV, but entirely in keeping with the character of an RS model.
