In September 1979, Audi introduced the Audi 200 – a more luxurious version of the Audi 100, which had been in production since autumn 1976. The Audi 200 was available with two engine options: the familiar naturally aspirated 2.2-litre five-cylinder engine and a newly developed turbocharged five-cylinder engine, the forerunner of an entire generation of high-performance turbo powerplants.
Models equipped with the naturally aspirated engine featured a 4+E manual gearbox, while the turbocharged version was fitted with a close-ratio five-speed sports transmission. Both models were also available with a three-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.
Standard equipment included 15-inch alloy wheels, power steering, twin rectangular headlamps with headlamp washers, a four-spoke steering wheel, central locking, exclusive velour upholstery, electric windows, a front spoiler, a trim panel between the rear lights and fog lamps integrated into the front bumper. A particularly distinctive feature was the pair of matching “slumber cushions” housed on the rear parcel shelf, upholstered in the same fabric as the seats.
The turbocharged model proved especially popular in the United States. A total of 18,180 Audi 200 5T models were built for the North American market, equipped with emissions control systems and detuned to 98 kW (133 PS) to meet local regulations.
